Thanks to CrossFit Industrious for hosting an amazing Friday Night Lights!
What makes CrossFit so unique? It certainly provides a constantly varied approach to training using functional movements and intensity which leads to dramatic gains in fitness. Everything can be scaled making it appropriate for anyone regardless of experience or physical background. It also prevents boredom since new skills and challenges are regularly presented.
All of the points above are certainly true, but what really makes CrossFit so special is the powerful sense of community that is created both inside the box and throughout the universal CrossFit community. Sociologist Ray Oldenburg introduced the concept of the Third Place in the late 80s, arguing that everyone has two main places in life — home and work — but we are happiest when we have a Third Place we can call our own. For centuries, this Third Place was the neighborhood café, tavern, bookstore or barbershop. In our busy, fragmented, social media-saturated world, those places aren’t what they used to be. But the unique culture of a CrossFit gym can foster that feeling of fellowship — that sense of uniting around a common interest or goal — that is the foundation of community.
The CrossFit community is one big family. We support each other and genuinely want each other to succeed both inside and outside of the box. People go to CrossFit gyms and connect with their peers. CrossFitters push each other to do better and to be better. Having that extra push and motivation can be very helpful on your fitness journey.
