Teaching Kids to Love Fitness
This past weekend I had the privilege of teaching a CrossFit Kids Specialty Course at Kitsap CrossFit in Poulsbo. In addition to coaching adults, I absolutely love coaching kids and teens, and am beyond blessed to be able to educate other coaches who wish to do the same in their respective communities. CrossFit Kids is designed to improve the general physical preparedness of young people and set them up for a lifetime of fitness.
In the article "Child's Play", CrossFit Kids trainers discuss how early sport specialization can have negative consequences on young children, especially when winning is placed above the joy of movement. Long time CrossFit Kids staff members, Todd Widman and Jon Gary, discuss how they "believe children should be allowed to develop a variety of physical skills before specializing in one sport. Working on the foundational movements will ultimately make children better at the sport of choice once they specialize. “If you can’t squat, if you can’t explosively open your hips, if can’t do core-to-extremity (movement) … you’re not fulfilling your potential in the outlet of that, which is sport,” Gary said.
